False perspectives on human language: why statistics needs linguistics

no code implementations17 Feb 2023 Matteo Greco, Andrea Cometa, Fiorenzo Artoni, Robert Frank, Andrea Moro

A sharp tension exists about the nature of human language between two opposite parties: those who believe that statistical surface distributions, in particular using measures like surprisal, provide a better understanding of language processing, vs. those who believe that discrete hierarchical structures implementing linguistic information such as syntactic ones are a better tool.

The welfare effects of nonlinear health dynamics

no code implementations8 Jul 2022 Chiara Dal Bianco, Andrea Moro

We generate a continuous measure of health to estimate a non-parametric model of health dynamics, showing that adverse health shocks are highly persistent when suffered by people in poor health.

Spatial-SIR with Network Structure and Behavior: Lockdown Rules and the Lucas Critique

no code implementations25 Mar 2021 Alberto Bisin, Andrea Moro

We introduce a model of the diffusion of an epidemic with demographically heterogeneous agents interacting socially on a spatially structured network.

Learning Epidemiology by Doing: The Empirical Implications of a Spatial-SIR Model with Behavioral Responses

no code implementations19 Feb 2021 Alberto Bisin, Andrea Moro

We simulate a spatial behavioral model of the diffusion of an infection to understand the role of geographic characteristics: the number and distribution of outbreaks, population size, density, and agents' movements.

Epidemiology

LATE for History

no code implementations16 Feb 2021 Alberto Bisin, Andrea Moro

In Historical Economics, Persistence studies document the persistence of some historical phenomenon or leverage this persistence to identify causal relationships of interest in the present.

Exclusion of Extreme Jurors and Minority Representation: The Effect of Jury Selection Procedures

no code implementations14 Feb 2021 Andrea Moro, Martin Van der Linden

We compare two jury selection procedures meant to safeguard against the inclusion of biased jurors that are perceived as causing minorities to be under-represented.

Annotating the MASC Corpus with BabelNet

no code implementations LREC 2014 Andrea Moro, Roberto Navigli, Francesco Maria Tucci, Rebecca J. Passonneau

Finally, we estimate the quality of our annotations using both manually-tagged named entities and word senses, obtaining an accuracy of roughly 70{\%} for both named entities and word sense annotations.
