Towards a control-theoretic trivialization of ABR video streaming

no code implementations2 Oct 2023 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join

Combining flatness-based control, model-free control and algebraic estimation techniques permits to trivialize several key issues in the adaptive bitrate (ABR) setting, now the dominant industry approach in video streaming: 1) A straightforward open-loop strategy for the bitrate and the buffer level; 2) closing the loop permits not only to take into account unavoidable mismatches and disturbances, like Internet fluctuations, but also the inherently discrete nature of the bitrate; 3) an easily implementable closed-form estimate for a bandwidth allows to handle severe variations of the channel capacity.

Speed-Adaptive Model-Free Lateral Control for Automated Cars

no code implementations4 Oct 2022 Marcos Moreno-Gonzalez, Antonio Artuñedo, Jorge Villagra, Cédric Join, Michel Fliess

In order to increase the number of situations in which an intelligent vehicle can operate without human intervention, lateral control is required to accurately guide it in a reference trajectory regardless of the shape of the road or the longitudinal speed.

Ramp metering: modeling, simulations and control issues

no code implementations12 Nov 2021 Cédric Join, Hassane Abouaïssa, Michel Fliess

The aim of ramp metering is to improve the highway traffic conditions by an appropriate regulation of the inflow from the on-ramps to the highway mainstream.

Feedback control of social distancing for COVID-19 via elementary formulae

no code implementations4 Oct 2021 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join, Alberto D'Onofrio

Social distancing has been enacted in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Toward simple "in silico" experiments for drugs administration in some cancer treatments

no code implementations27 Jul 2021 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join, Kaouther Moussa, Seddik M. Djouadi, Mohamed W. Alsager

We present some "in silico" experiments to design combined chemo- and immunotherapy treatment schedules.

An alternative to proportional-integral and proportional-integral-derivative regulators: Intelligent proportional-derivative regulators

no code implementations23 Jun 2021 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join

This paper suggests to replace PIs and PIDs, which play a key role in control engineering, by intelligent Proportional-Derivative feedback loops, or iPDs, which are derived from model-free control.

Machine learning and control engineering: The model-free case

no code implementations10 Jun 2020 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join

This paper states that Model-Free Control (MFC), which must not be confused with Model-Free Reinforcement Learning, is a new tool for Machine Learning (ML).

La production de nitrites lors de la dénitrification des eaux usées par biofiltration - Stratégie de contrôle et de réduction des concentrations résiduelles

no code implementations28 Nov 2017 Vincent Rocher, Cédric Join, Stéphane Mottelet, Jean Bernier, Sabrina Rechdaoui-Guérin, Sam Azimi, Paul Lessard, André Pauss, Michel Fliess

Research studies have been led in the MOCOPEE program (www. mocopee. com) to better understand the underlying mechanisms behind the production of nitrite during wastewater denitrification and to develop technical tools (measurement and control solutions) to assist on-site reductions of nitrite productions.

Un résultat intrigant en commande sans modèle

no code implementations8 Nov 2017 Cédric Join, Emmanuel Delaleau, Michel Fliess, Claude H. Moog

An elementary mathematical example proves, thanks to the Routh-Hurwitz criterion, a result that is intriguing with respect to today's practical understanding of model-free control, i. e., an "intelligent" proportional controller (iP) may turn to be more difficult to tune than an intelligent proportional-derivative one (iPD).

Energy saving for building heating via a simple and efficient model-free control design: First steps with computer simulations

no code implementations12 Aug 2017 Hassane Abouaïssa, Ola Alhaj Hasan, Cédric Join, Michel Fliess, Didier Defer

The model-based control of building heating systems for energy saving encounters severe physical, mathematical and calibration difficulties in the numerous attempts that has been published until now.

Systematic and multifactor risk models revisited

no code implementations18 Dec 2013 Michel Fliess, Cédric Join

Systematic and multifactor risk models are revisited via methods which were already successfully developed in signal processing and in automatic control.
