Convolutional Deep Denoising Autoencoders for Radio Astronomical Images

no code implementations16 Oct 2021 Claudio Gheller, Franco Vazza

We apply a Machine Learning technique known as Convolutional Denoising Autoencoder to denoise synthetic images of state-of-the-art radio telescopes, with the goal of detecting the faint, diffused radio sources predicted to characterise the radio cosmic web.

Ultra-Steep Spectrum Radio `Jellyfish' Uncovered in Abell 2877

no code implementations11 Mar 2021 Torrance Hodgson, Iacopo Bartalucci, Melanie Johnston-Hollitt, Benjamin McKinley, Franco Vazza, Denis Wittor

We report on the discovery of a mysterious ultra-steep spectrum (USS) synchrotron source in the galaxy cluster Abell 2877.

On the alignment of haloes, filaments and magnetic fields in the simulated cosmic web

no code implementations2 Mar 2021 Serena Banfi, Franco Vazza, Claudio Gheller

The continuous flow of gas and dark matter across scales in the cosmic web can generate correlated dynamical properties of haloes and filaments (and the magnetic fields they contain).

Discovering the most elusive radio relic in the sky: Diffuse Shock Acceleration caught in the act?

no code implementations22 Apr 2020 Nicola T. Locatelli, Kamlesh Rajpurohit, Franco Vazza, Fabio Gastaldello, Daniele Dallacasa, Annalisa Bonafede, Mariachiara Rossetti, Chiara Stuardi, Etienne Bonassieux, Gianfranco Brunetti, Marcus Brüggen, Timothy Shimwell

The case of acceleration is challenged by the low predicted efficiency of low-Mach number merger shocks, unable to explain the power observed in most radio relics.
