A phonetic model of non-native spoken word processing

no code implementations EACL 2021 Yevgen Matusevych, Herman Kamper, Thomas Schatz, Naomi H. Feldman, Sharon Goldwater

We then test the model on a spoken word processing task, showing that phonology may not be necessary to explain some of the word processing effects observed in non-native speakers.

Evaluating computational models of infant phonetic learning across languages

no code implementations6 Aug 2020 Yevgen Matusevych, Thomas Schatz, Herman Kamper, Naomi H. Feldman, Sharon Goldwater

In the first year of life, infants' speech perception becomes attuned to the sounds of their native language.

Evaluating Low-Level Speech Features Against Human Perceptual Data

no code implementations TACL 2017 Caitlin Richter, Naomi H. Feldman, Harini Salgado, Aren Jansen

We introduce a method for measuring the correspondence between low-level speech features and human perception, using a cognitive model of speech perception implemented directly on speech recordings.

Infant directed speech is consistent with teaching

no code implementations1 Jun 2016 Baxter S. Eaves Jr., Naomi H. Feldman, Thomas L. Griffiths, Patrick Shafto

We qualitatively compare the simulated teaching data with human IDS, finding that the teaching data exhibit many features of IDS, including some that have been taken as evidence IDS is not for teaching.
