Measuring the viewing angle of GW170817 with electromagnetic and gravitational waves

1 code implementation11 Apr 2018 Daniel Finstad, Soumi De, Duncan A. Brown, Edo Berger, Christopher M. Biwer

The joint detection of gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 ushered in a new era of multi-messenger astronomy.

We find that the tidal deformability and 90$\%$ credible interval is $\tilde{\Lambda}=310^{+679}_{-234}$ for a uniform component mass prior, $\tilde{\Lambda}=354^{+691}_{-245}$ for a component mass prior informed by radio observations of Galactic double neutron stars, and $\tilde{\Lambda}=334^{+669}_{-241}$ for a component mass prior informed by radio pulsars.

With the larger BNS horizon distance in the Cosmic Explorer era, on-axis short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) and their afterglows (though accompanying only some of the GW-detected mergers) supplant kilonovae as the most promising counterparts for redshift identification.

Detection and Parameter Estimation of Gravitational Waves from Binary Neutron-Star Mergers in Real LIGO Data using Deep Learning

no code implementations24 Dec 2020 Plamen G. Krastev, Kiranjyot Gill, V. Ashley Villar, Edo Berger

One of the key challenges of real-time detection and parameter estimation of gravitational waves from compact binary mergers is the computational cost of conventional matched-filtering and Bayesian inference approaches.

A Deep Learning Approach for Active Anomaly Detection of Extragalactic Transients

1 code implementation22 Mar 2021 V. Ashley Villar, Miles Cranmer, Edo Berger, Gabriella Contardo, Shirley Ho, Griffin Hosseinzadeh, Joshua Yao-Yu Lin

There is a shortage of multi-wavelength and spectroscopic followup capabilities given the number of transient and variable astrophysical events discovered through wide-field, optical surveys such as the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
