CodeScientist: End-to-End Semi-Automated Scientific Discovery with Code-based Experimentation

no code implementations20 Mar 2025 Peter Jansen, Oyvind Tafjord, Marissa Radensky, Pao Siangliulue, Tom Hope, Bhavana Dalvi Mishra, Bodhisattwa Prasad Majumder, Daniel S. Weld, Peter Clark

Despite the surge of interest in autonomous scientific discovery (ASD) of software artifacts (e. g., improved ML algorithms), current ASD systems face two key limitations: (1) they largely explore variants of existing codebases or similarly constrained design spaces, and (2) they produce large volumes of research artifacts (such as automatically generated papers and code) that are typically evaluated using conference-style paper review with limited evaluation of code.

ArxivDIGESTables: Synthesizing Scientific Literature into Tables using Language Models

1 code implementation25 Oct 2024 Benjamin Newman, Yoonjoo Lee, Aakanksha Naik, Pao Siangliulue, Raymond Fok, Juho Kim, Daniel S. Weld, Joseph Chee Chang, Kyle Lo

When conducting literature reviews, scientists often create literature review tables - tables whose rows are publications and whose columns constitute a schema, a set of aspects used to compare and contrast the papers.

Scideator: Human-LLM Scientific Idea Generation Grounded in Research-Paper Facet Recombination

no code implementations23 Sep 2024 Marissa Radensky, Simra Shahid, Raymond Fok, Pao Siangliulue, Tom Hope, Daniel S. Weld

The scientific ideation process often involves blending salient aspects of existing papers to create new ideas, and facet-based ideation is an established framework for idea generation.

PaperWeaver: Enriching Topical Paper Alerts by Contextualizing Recommended Papers with User-collected Papers

no code implementations5 Mar 2024 Yoonjoo Lee, Hyeonsu B. Kang, Matt Latzke, Juho Kim, Jonathan Bragg, Joseph Chee Chang, Pao Siangliulue

With the rapid growth of scholarly archives, researchers subscribe to "paper alert" systems that periodically provide them with recommendations of recently published papers that are similar to previously collected papers.

Beyond Summarization: Designing AI Support for Real-World Expository Writing Tasks

no code implementations5 Apr 2023 Zejiang Shen, Tal August, Pao Siangliulue, Kyle Lo, Jonathan Bragg, Jeff Hammerbacher, Doug Downey, Joseph Chee Chang, David Sontag

In this position paper, we argue that developing AI supports for expository writing has unique and exciting research challenges and can lead to high real-world impacts.
