How Many Elements Matter?

no code implementations9 Feb 2021 Yuan-Sen Ting, David H. Weinberg

Our results demonstrate that cross-element correlations are a much more sensitive probe of hidden structure than dispersion, and they can be measured precisely in a large sample even if star-by-star measurement noise is comparable to the intrinsic scatter.

Nucleosynthesis signatures of neutrino-driven winds from proto-neutron stars: a perspective from chemical evolution models

no code implementations9 Feb 2021 Fiorenzo Vincenzo, Todd A. Thompson, David H. Weinberg, Emily J. Griffith, James W. Johnson, Jennifer A. Johnson

We test the hypothesis that the observed first-peak (Sr, Y, Zr) and second-peak (Ba) s-process elemental abundances in low-metallicity Milky Way stars, and the abundances of the elements Mo and Ru, can be explained by a pervasive r-process contribution originating in neutrino-driven winds from highly-magnetic and rapidly rotating proto-neutron stars (proto-NSs).

The distribution of [$α$/Fe] in the Milky Way disc

no code implementations12 Jan 2021 Fiorenzo Vincenzo, David H. Weinberg, Andrea Miglio, Richard R. Lane, Alexandre Roman-Lopes

Using a sample of red giant stars from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) Data Release 16, we infer the conditional distribution $p([\alpha/\text{Fe}]\,|\,[\text{Fe/H}])$ in the Milky Way disk for the $\alpha$-elements Mg, O, Si, S, and Ca.

Cosmology with galaxy cluster weak lensing: statistical limits and experimental design

no code implementations3 Dec 2020 Hao-Yi Wu, David H. Weinberg, Andrés N. Salcedo, Benjamin D. Wibking

A one-month observing program with Roman Space Telescope targeting approximately 2500 massive clusters could achieve a 0. 5% constraint on sigma_8(z=0. 7) on its own, or a ~0. 33% constraint in combination with the HLS.

The Impact of Starbursts on Element Abundance Ratios

no code implementations6 Nov 2019 James W. Johnson, David H. Weinberg

We investigate the impact of bursts in star formation on the predictions of one-zone chemical evolution models, adopting oxygen (O), iron (Fe), and strontium (Sr), as representative $\alpha$, iron-peak, and s-process elements, respectively.

When combined with supernova Ia data, we find H0 = 67. 3+/-1. 0 km/s/Mpc even for our most general dark energy model, in tension with some direct measurements.

Theoretical Models of the Halo Occupation Distribution: Separating Central and Satellite Galaxies

no code implementations30 Aug 2004 Zheng Zheng, Andreas A. Berlind, David H. Weinberg, Andrew J. Benson, Carlton M. Baugh, Shaun Cole, Romeel Dave, Carlos S. Frenk, Neal Katz, Cedric G. Lacey

In agreement with earlier results for dark matter subhalos, we find that the mean occupation function <N> for galaxies above a baryonic mass threshold can be approximated by a step function for central galaxies plus a power law for satellites, and that the distribution of satellite numbers is close to Poisson at fixed halo mass.
