The [CII] deficit, which describes the observed decrease in the ratio of [CII] 158 micron emission to continuum infrared emission in galaxies with high star formation surface densities, places a significant challenge to the interpretation of [CII] detections from across the observable universe.

AlFoCS + F3D II: unexpectedly low gas-to-dust ratios in the Fornax galaxy cluster

no code implementations3 Feb 2021 Nikki Zabel, Timothy A. Davis, Matthew W. L. Smith, Marc Sarzi, Alessandro Loni, Paolo Serra, Maritza A. Lara-López, Phil Cigan, Maarten Baes, George J. This implies that a relatively large fraction of the metals in these Fornax systems is locked up in dust, which is possibly due to altered chemical evolution as a result of the dense environment.
