Properties of the Circumgalactic Medium in Cosmic Ray-Dominated Galaxy Halos

no code implementations30 Aug 2019 Suoqing Ji, T. K. Chan, Cameron B. Hummels, Philip F. Hopkins, Jonathan Stern, Dušan Kereš, Eliot Quataert, Claude-André Faucher-Giguère, Norman Murray

Neglecting CRs, the same halos are primarily warm/hot ($T\gtrsim 10^{5}\,$K) with thermal pressure balancing gravity, collisional ionization dominates, O VI columns are lower and Ne VIII higher, and the cool phase is confined to dense filaments in local thermal pressure equilibrium with the hot phase.

Cataloging Accreted Stars within Gaia DR2 using Deep Learning

no code implementations15 Jul 2019 Bryan Ostdiek, Lina Necib, Timothy Cohen, Marat Freytsis, Mariangela Lisanti, Shea Garrison-Kimmel, Andrew Wetzel, Robyn E. Sanderson, Philip F. Hopkins

The goal of this study is to present the development of a machine learning based approach that utilizes phase space alone to separate the Gaia DR2 stars into two categories: those accreted onto the Milky Way from those that are in situ.

Under the Firelight: Stellar Tracers of the Local Dark Matter Velocity Distribution in the Milky Way

Based on results from Gaia, we estimate that $42 ^{+26}_{-22}\%$ of the local dark matter that is accreted from luminous mergers is in debris flow.

GIZMO: A New Class of Accurate, Mesh-Free Hydrodynamic Simulation Methods

3 code implementations25 Sep 2014 Philip F. Hopkins

We consider a large suite of test problems, and find that on all problems the new methods appear competitive with moving-mesh schemes, with some advantages (particularly in angular momentum conservation), at the cost of enhanced noise.
