Scattering Spectra Models for Physics

no code implementations29 Jun 2023 Sihao Cheng, Rudy Morel, Erwan Allys, Brice Ménard, Stéphane Mallat

In this paper, we introduce scattering spectra models for stationary fields and we show that they provide accurate and robust statistical descriptions of a wide range of fields encountered in physics.

How to quantify fields or textures? A guide to the scattering transform

no code implementations30 Nov 2021 Sihao Cheng, Brice Ménard

Extracting information from stochastic fields or textures is a ubiquitous task in science, from exploratory data analysis to classification and parameter estimation.

Forever young white dwarfs: when stellar ageing stops

no code implementations7 Aug 2020 María E. Camisassa, Leandro G. Althaus, Santiago Torres, Alejandro H. Córsico, Sihao Cheng, Alberto Rebassa-Mansergas

In this study we find that the energy released by $^{22}$Ne sedimentation in the deep interior of ultramassive white dwarfs with CO cores and high $^{22}$Ne content is consistent with the long cooling delay of these stellar remnants.

A Gravitational Redshift Measurement of the White Dwarf Mass-Radius Relation

no code implementations28 Jul 2020 Vedant Chandra, Hsiang-Chih Hwang, Nadia L. Zakamska, Sihao Cheng

The mass-radius relation of white dwarfs is largely determined by the equation of state of degenerate electrons, which causes the stellar radius to decrease as mass increases.

The delayed evolution of high-mass white dwarfs: the Q branch and double-white-dwarf mergers

1 code implementation29 May 2019 Sihao Cheng, Jeffrey D. Cummings, Brice Ménard

We show that, in addition to crystallization and merger delays, an $8$-Gyr cooling delay is required on the Q branch, which affects about $7\%$ of high-mass WDs.
