The impact of dark energy on galaxy formation. What does the future of our Universe hold?

no code implementations18 Oct 2017 Jaime Salcido, Richard G. Bower, Luke A. Barnes, Geraint F. Lewis, Pascal J. Elahi, Tom Theuns, Matthieu Schaller, Robert A. Crain, Joop Schaye

Interestingly, simulations without feedback from accreting black holes predict an upturn in the cosmic star formation rate for $t>15$ Gyr due to the rejuvenation of massive ($ > 10^{11} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) galaxies.

These discs show a wide range of bar strengths, from unbarred discs to weak bars to strongly barred systems (= 20%).

We examine the baryon content of low-mass {\Lambda}CDM halos $(10^8<M_{200}/{\rm M_\odot}<5\times 10^{9})$ using the APOSTLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.

Size matters: abundance matching, galaxy sizes, and the Tully-Fisher relation in EAGLE

no code implementations11 Jul 2016 Ismael Ferrero, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Laura V. Sales, Richard G. Bower, Robert A. Crain, Carlos S. Frenk, Matthieu Schaller, Joop Schaye, Tom Theuns

EAGLE galaxies evolve with lookback time following approximately the prescriptions of AM models and the observed mass-size relation of bright spirals, leading to a weak TFR evolution consistent with observation out to $z=1$.

The free parameters of the subgrid models for feedback are calibrated to the redshift z=0 galaxy stellar mass function, galaxy sizes and black hole mass - stellar mass relation.

The EAGLE simulations of galaxy formation: calibration of subgrid physics and model variations

no code implementations6 Jan 2015 Robert A. Crain, Joop Schaye, Richard G. Bower, Michelle Furlong, Matthieu Schaller, Tom Theuns, Claudio Dalla Vecchia, Carlos S. Frenk, Ian G. McCarthy, John C. Helly, Adrian Jenkins, Yetli M. Rosas-Guevara, Simon D. M. White, James W. Trayford

We find that the properties of galaxies with stellar mass <~ M* (the "knee" of the galaxy stellar mass function) are largely governed by feedback associated with star formation, while those of more massive galaxies are also controlled by feedback from accretion onto their central black holes.

Because the feedback efficiencies cannot be predicted from first principles, we calibrate them to the z~0 galaxy stellar mass function and the amplitude of the galaxy-central black hole mass relation, also taking galaxy sizes into account.

1 code implementation15 Apr 2013 Gabriel Altay, Tom Theuns

We characterise the errors in our implementation in stages beginning with comparison to known analytic solutions and ending with a realistic model of the z = 3 cosmological UV background incident onto a suite of spherically symmetric models of gaseous galactic halos.

Galaxies form stars in a self-regulated fashion at a rate controlled by the balance between, on the one hand, feedback from massive stars and black holes and, on the other hand, gas cooling and accretion.
