To beta or not to beta: can higher-order Jeans analysis break the mass-anisotropy degeneracy in simulated dwarfs?

1 code implementation20 Nov 2019 Anna Genina, Justin I. Read, Carlos S. Frenk, Shaun Cole, Alejandro Benitez-Llambay, Aaron D. Ludlow, Julio F. Navarro, Kyle A. Oman, Andrew Robertson

A non-parametric higher-order Jeans analysis method, GravSphere, was recently used to constrain the density profiles of Local Group dwarf galaxies, classifying them into those that are more likely to have an inner dark matter cusp and those that are likely to have a core (Read et al.).

We provide a best-fitting contracted NFW halo model to the MW rotation curve that matches the data very well.

The vertical structure of gaseous galaxy discs in cold dark matter halos

no code implementations25 Jul 2017 Alejandro Benitez-Llambay, Julio F. Navarro, Carlos S. Frenk, Aaron D. Ludlow

EAGLE low-mass discs are non-self-gravitating so the softening plays no role in their vertical structure.

Barred galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation

These discs show a wide range of bar strengths, from unbarred discs to weak bars to strongly barred systems (= 20%).

The properties of "dark" ΛCDM halos in the Local Group

no code implementations5 Sep 2016 Alejandro Benítez-Llambay, Julio F. Navarro, Carlos S. Frenk, Till Sawala, Kyle Oman, Azadeh Fattahi, Matthieu Schaller, Joop Schaye, Robert A. Crain, Tom Theuns

We examine the baryon content of low-mass {\Lambda}CDM halos $(10^8<M_{200}/{\rm M_\odot}<5\times 10^{9})$ using the APOSTLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulations.

Size matters: abundance matching, galaxy sizes, and the Tully-Fisher relation in EAGLE

no code implementations11 Jul 2016 Ismael Ferrero, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Laura V. Sales, Richard G. Bower, Robert A. Crain, Carlos S. Frenk, Matthieu Schaller, Joop Schaye, Tom Theuns

EAGLE galaxies evolve with lookback time following approximately the prescriptions of AM models and the observed mass-size relation of bright spirals, leading to a weak TFR evolution consistent with observation out to $z=1$.

Mergers and the outside-in formation of dwarf spheroidals

no code implementations19 Nov 2015 Alejandro Benítez-Llambay, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Stefan Gottloeber, Gustavo Yepes, Yehuda Hoffman, Matthias Steinmetz

We argue that dwarf-dwarf mergers offer a plausible scenario for the formation of systems with multiple distinct populations and, more generally, for the origin of age and metallicity gradients in dwarf spheroidals.

Because the feedback efficiencies cannot be predicted from first principles, we calibrate them to the z~0 galaxy stellar mass function and the amplitude of the galaxy-central black hole mass relation, also taking galaxy sizes into account.

The Imprint of Reionization on the Star Formation Histories of Dwarf Galaxies

no code implementations21 May 2014 Alejandro Benítez-Llambay, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Stefan Gottloeber, Gustavo Yepes, Yehuda Hoffman, Matthias Steinmetz

We explore the impact of cosmic reionization on nearby isolated dwarf galaxies using a compilation of SFHs estimated from deep HST data and a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation of the Local Group.

Counterrotating Stars in Simulated Galaxy Disks

no code implementations5 Nov 2013 David G. Algorry, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Laura V. Sales, Matthias Steinmetz, Franziska Piontek

Counterrotating stars in disk galaxies are a puzzling dynamical feature whose origin has been ascribed to either satellite accretion events or to disk instabilities triggered by deviations from axisymmetry.

Dwarf Galaxies and the Cosmic Web

no code implementations2 Nov 2012 Alejandro Benitez-Llambay, Julio F. Navarro, Mario G. Abadi, Stefan Gottloeber, Gustavo Yepes, Yehuda Hoffman, Matthias Steinmetz

This "cosmic web stripping" may help to explain the scarcity of dwarf galaxies compared with the numerous low-mass halos expected in \Lambda CDM and the large diversity of star formation histories and morphologies characteristic of faint galaxies.
